Pocketknives, hat found inside Hunley

Archaeologists have found the pocketknives of two Hunley crewmen,
and another one's hat.
Bob Neyland, project director, said scientists excavating the
Confederate submarine were surprised to find a "slouch" hat in the Hunley's
interior. It is a wide-brimmed military hat, common for the era. But not common for a
submarine, Hunley Commission Chairman Glenn McConnell said.
"To me, this is fascinating," McConnell said.
"It's the last thing I expected to find on board the Hunley."
Since there was little use for hats aboard the Hunley, it was
probably just brought along because the crewman didn't want to leave it.
Neyland said the hat is a dark color, extremely fragile. There is
leather edging along the brim and a band around the body of the hat.
Neyland said the knives are not what you would consider regular
pocketknives, but they do fold. The knives, found near the sub's floor, are covered in
concretion.
Excavation has slowed as the work has moved into the bottom of
the submarine.
Neyland said Monday they are now working toward the forward area,
where the submarine's commander, Lt. George E. Dixon, is expected to be found.
