Could this be the same coin that Lt. Dixon carried with him and was found
during the Hunley Excavation on May 25th, 2001
DAHLONEGA MINT & CHARLOTTE MINT HALF EAGLES The 1860-D half eagle is similar in rarity to the 1855-D half eagle. Softness in the strike on the head of Liberty (obverse) and the eagle's neck and legs (reverse) are fairly common. The rims are round and have a beveled appearance. Many specimens have surfaces that are heavily abraded, especially on the obverse. Original, uncleaned specimens have very pleasing coloration that ranges from medium green-gold to rich orange-gold and luster that is frosty and above average in quality. There are some very attractive coins of this date that have superb eye appeal. Roughly 185 specimens survive with less than 9% being Mint State.
