Nice Site! Just this last fall I found out that Edgar Collins Singer was a nephew of my ggg-grandfather. His sister, Clara, was married to Charles E. Frary, probably the C.E. Frary who was part of his group. Another brother remained in Illinois and was a successfull businessman and state representative. I have a letter dated 1849 from this brother, and another letter from Clara which mentions Edgar, when they were living in Chicago in 1851. This real history makes our ancestors come to life!

I believe that Spence did discover the Hunley first. BUT he didn't know anyone that would listen to him, and didn't know how to get the necessary attention. The sand around the Hunley was probably shifted during a hurricane, exposing the hull temporarily. I know there is salvage money involved, but that can be sorted out. This is beginning to be a classic story of greed.

I was first turned onto Hunley lore in 1965 as a Jr High student. It all started with a chance look through a library book on the civil war. After reading about the first successful attack by a sub and the subsequent loss of same, as well as the chilling history behind the almost jinxed sea trials made me wonder what it must have been like and also "What happened to them!" This notion was never more powerful than when I was stationed at The 6th Naval District Headquarters at the Charleston Navy Base 1976-79. For "libs" the guys and I would hang out surf fishing and stuff out at Sullivans,Folly, Isle of Palms, etc. I once stood waste deep while fishing Breach Inlet and wondered if the damned thing could be right next to me! That summer I introduced myself To "Cussler" RtheTT, great book! Then after reading The Sea Hunters I new that soon a lifetime of questions would be answered. I have visited your site numerous times from the the begining of its birth and have read the guest book each time. Just wondering because of the remarks of many writers refering to Friends of the Hunley, why you rarely correct the public. Though you do have a statement clarifying that you are not part of "Friends of" I believe you should be given credit where it is due.That being that you are a devoted citizen and sole creators of the Hunley.com...who give your time to provide free information with no help,or support from "Friends of the hunley " because you supported the hunleys cause,not out of greed or any motive other than the desire to give the public information that they would otherwise have to pay for,and were in fact as I recall a few months back threatened by that organization with law suits and demands to close your site. In my opinion your site far out shines the "members only" site which provides little for our membership dollars. Keep up the great work and don't be shy about telling the public the whole truth...You deserve notariety...being the BEST site on the web....sincerely ladyfair2

I have enjoyed your site. It is good to find actual content as opposed to the flash that seems to be the thrust of most web sites. It is a bit sad to see a quest started by love of adventure and a desire for knowledge being over shadowed by dollar signs. Funding issues are of a real concern especially for a technological wonder like the Confederate submersible developed in a period of American history not appreciated by the majority of modern day Americans. But they need not become squabbles in the public light, or political spin for a personal agenda, that degrades the sincere efforts of so many people. I have no agenda other than the love of history and my heritage as both a Southerner and American. I was happy to give my money to support recovery and preservation but I twinge at the thought of a Hunley-land with its kiddy rides, or a politically correct sterile glass cage with a brass plaque at the bottom saying Huntley (misspelling on purpose.) The people of the State of South Carolina and America have funded this event either by tax money or donations and while there are many individuals that deserve recognition for their accomplishments in the task but it still belongs to all of America. South Carolina has the lead in this and I for one hope she can maintain her pride and dignity.

This is a great site to be able to look at, and get a real feel about those poor souls down in the hull of a boiler. I saw the TNT production about the Hunley and became interested.
